Overwhelmed about finding an internship? Don’t know what to do with your major? Don’t know where to look for resources? Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered. We’ve all been there; figuring out internship opportunities and career planning can feel stressful and overwhelming, but we are here to share resources and tips and tricks to guide you through the process.

The first step is to make sure you have a strong resume. A well-written and organized resume really makes you stand out from the crowd and showcases your strengths. If you want a second opinion on your resume or don’t know where to start, the SPHHS Office of Career Planning is a great place to start! They have peer advisors and professionals ready to help you with any career questions and support, including finding internships and jobs, networking at career fairs, social media marketing, interviewing skills, and graduate school applications. They have drop-in hours in Arnold House, or you can set up an appointment.

One of the best tools for finding internships for UMass students is Handshake. Log in with your student ID and you can discover what internship positions are available near you, filtering the options to find one that is the best fit. LinkedIn is another great online tool that allows you to search for internship postings and build a strong online profile for potential employers to view. The Office of Career Planning is additionally equipped to help you navigate both of these platforms – just stop by!

Finally, one of the best ways to learn more about your career options and next steps is to talk to those around you in the field. Older students, friends and family, and especially professors and staff are excellent resources to you, as they were once in the same position you are in now.

Emailing a professor asking about any available positions to be involved with research they are currently conducting or simply asking them questions about their career journey are great ways to get your foot in the door and gain a better understanding of your career options. Feeling like you don’t know what you are doing in regard to internships and career planning is totally normal – don’t panic. UMass Public Health Club, along with plenty of other resources at UMass, are here to help!
