With the stress of finals approaching, it's easy to cast self-care to the side. It's the final push and we are all working hard to get through that last project, that last lab, and that last exam. As the semester comes to a close, we encourage you not to neglect your self care in these final weeks.
Self care looks different for everyone! For some it's a spontaneous creative project, for others its scheduled down time where you can be alone, and for others a quick phone call to a loved one does the trick. It can be easy to feel guilty over taking some extra time for yourself instead of studying some more, but remember that self care only benefits you in the long run in all aspects of your life and responsibilities. We produce our best work when in the right mindspaces.
For some, time management is key to keeping their schedule on track. For those of you, it might be best to pencil in your self care into your busy schedule. Carve out 30 minutes for a walk in the sun, set aside 20 minutes to read before bed, or plan a no phone Sunday morning to reset for the week. Planning does not take away the benefits of self care.
For others, self care is spontaneous, dependent on what their body and mind needs at that moment. Embarking on a new creative project, exploring something new with friends, or talking out your feelings in a journal are all wonderful options.
One thing that I have found centers me when I get stressed is to meditate. I have used some great resources such as podcasts, youtube videos, or even just calming music to reset and reduce anxiety. It can be unfamiliar or awkward at first, but I have found it to be extremely beneficial to, for any amount of time, to just pause and check in with myself. Be kind to yourself this finals season, you’re almost there!
