November Meeting Recap

Our November meeting was held on 18 November in the ILC. Many of you liked the new location and setup, so we will work on booking the same room for our next meetings! This month's theme was food insecurity, an especially important topic during Thanksgiving.

We started the meeting with a gratitude activity by writing down what we were thankful for. An NPR 3-minute listen explained that this activity is good for our health.

Our announcements included presenting the new blog posts by our Core Members, updates on our oral health campaign, and our coat drive project (an exciting idea from our member Kat). Also, thank you to everyone who has signed up and raised money for our FTK group! We are looking forward to working together and participating in the dance marathon. If you haven't already, please join our team: http://bit.ly/phcftk.

Also at our meeting was a chat by an SPHHS Career Ambassador, Lexi. She talked about their resources like resume and cover letter services. You also have the opportunity to apply to be a Career Ambassador next semester! Email your resume and cover letter to careerambassadors@umass.edu by 2 December.

One of our treasurers Gaashaan presented on diabetes, a health topic personal to him. He discussed important points and brought awareness to National Diabetes Month this November. To reduce your risk of type 2 diabetes you can: lose weight, eat healthy, stay active, quit smoking, and work with a health professional.

We had an excellent presentation by our Core Member Mackenzie on food insecurity among college students. Her key takeaways were:

  • Food insecurity does impact college students

  • Food insecurity is a serious issue and a social determinant of health

  • Resources are available in the community and it is important to be aware of them and utilize them if needed

  • It is important to keep learning and advocating for the issue, as it is a complex and ongoing problem

We ended the meeting by designing a Thanksgiving basket to be donated to the Amherst Survival Center. Thank you to all our members who brought food items, we appreciate your support!
